ROB EDWARDS was bursting with pride today after being appointed Town's club captain.

The 33-year-old left-back was the first player targeted by manager Peter Jackson when he returned to the McAlpine and he has led the senior team in pre-season games.

Now, Edwards will wear the armband at Wrexham tomorrow (3.00), for the big kick-off against Cambridge next week and throughout the Third Division campaign.

"It's a great honour, I'm absolutely delighted and, hopefully, we are going to have a good season," said Edwards.

"Even though I've been captain in pre-season I had no inkling it would be a permanent thing and I was absolutely gobsmacked when Peter told me.

"It really is a wonderful feeling - brilliant - to think I'll be leading out this club, and I'm sure there will be an extra few butterflies when we run down the tunnel for the first game against Cambridge.

"That will be a very proud moment for me and my family and I can't wait.

"Hopefully there will be a big crowd to back us, too, because I know the fans are just as delighted as the players that the club has been saved and they really want us to do well."

Edwards succeeds Kevin Sharp and Gareth Evans at No3 and Steve Jenkins and Eddie Youds as skipper.

"Robbie is the obvious choice for me because he represents a big part of what we are trying to achieve at this club - honesty and total commitment," said Jackson, who includes trialist Stuart Preston tomorrow.

"On his personality and his attitude alone he is a leader and, as I've said all along, I want people to be proud to support this club just like I'm proud to be manager. I'm certain Robbie will be very proud to be captain.

"He will do anything for Huddersfield Town both on and off the field because Robbie is 100%, which is why he was the first player I wanted back."

All Town's fit players travel tomorrow and those who don't play will train. Steve Yates is pencilled in to start but Efe Sodje won't, as his contract won't be ready until next week.

Jackson will be at the McAlpine tomorrow (10.30-11.30) to meet fans buying season-tickets.

Town - Gray, Booty, Hughes, Yates, Edwards, Holland, Carss, Thompson, Schofield, Newby, Stead. Subs to be announced.
