Old boy Adam Clayton is backing Huddersfield Town to thrive under their new head coach David Wagner.

The midfielder, transferred to Middlesbrough for £1.5m in August 2014, scored his first goal for the second-placed Teessiders to help sink Wager’s side 2-0 and leave them in the Championship drop zone.

But the 26-year-old said: “Huddersfield are a good team. This was as tough a game as we’ve had all season.

“We have dominated most of our previous matches this time, but Huddersfield’s way of playing was tough for us to deal with.

“We scored at the right times (Clayton in the ninth minute and Emilio Nsue in the 84th) and dug in.

“But it was tough, and playing like that, I don’t think Huddersfield will be in trouble for much longer.”

Boro boss Aitor Karanka was also impressed with Tow.

The Spaniard said: “Huddersfield looked like the top team, not us.

“David Wagner may have lost his first two games but he should keep going with his philosophy.

“When I first came to this club (in November 2013) I lost two of my first five matches but Middlesbrough trusted me and if Huddersfield trust him they will do well.”
