Huddersfield Town fans have pretty much run out of superlatives as they reflect on a memorable 2-1 win at Newcastle United.

Brilliant, magnificent and tremendous are just some of the descriptions of events at St James’ Park , where Town triumphed with goals from Nahki Wells and Jack Payne in front of 52,079.

That’s the biggest crowd Town have ever played in front of at second-tier level – and it included 3,200 of their own delighted followers.

There was praise for the whole team, for head coach David Wagner, for chairman Dean Hoyle and for the fans who sang their hearts out.

And criticism for pundit Ian Holloway, who reckoned Town would get relegated ahead of his Sky colleague Jamie Redknapp predicting a 6-1 win for Newcastle!

So here’s what the fans had to say:

SPH of Almondbury put it simply: “It is days like this that make it all worthwhile being a Town fan.

“It is a long, long time since we beat a team as good as Newcastle in their own backyard and the players deserve a lot of credit.

Look here: Are you among the Town fans at Newcastle?

“I am not going to pick out any one of them because they all deserve credit for a great win but ... the brains behind it all are our wonderful chairman and manager who have planned scrupulously for this result.

“Brilliant and I can’t wait now for Tuesday at Villa and next week at home to Barnsley. Anything is possible!”

Graham, from Huddersfield, pointed out: “We are finally a successful working unit in all areas.

“But for an unfortunate penalty decision we would have kept a clean sheet.

“Midfield ticked along nicely and the forwards caused all sorts of problems for Newcastle on the break.

“We also finally have strength in depth. To have subs of Payne and Palmer’s calibre to come off the bench shows how far Town have improved this season in personnel.

“And finally a word of praise for Mark Hudson, who defended solidly alongside Schindler.”

Kim, of Golcar, picked out two other players.

“Excellent first half performance. Huddersfield too deep in most of second half,” she said.

“Mooy excellent, and good to see a goalkeeper (Danny Ward) mixing long balls as well as short ones with his distribution.”

Sheffield-based James added: “What a fantastic performance and result. Holloway should have done his homework on imports before tipping us for relegation.”

Phil, from Almondbury, reckons Town could be the surprise package of the season, while Dave from Oxford explained: “Chuffed to bits with Town.

“Held the back line well, a bit unlucky with the pen. Very quick on the break. Must remember to take some binoculars next time (with reference to how high and far back the Town fans were seated)”.

Steve, in Golcar, praised Wagner.

“David, you are a genius,” he said. “Your players are out of this world.”

Bats, in Mirfield, agreed: “Excellent team performance and tactics brilliant.

“Positive substitutions as always from Wagner, even when games are finally poised, which turned one point into three.”

David, of Wyke, hailed “superb management and superb performance” while Mick, in Huddersfield, said: “Hudson was captain fantastic, despite giving away the pen.”

Peter, who follows Town from Heckmondwike, told www.examiner.co.uk : “A long time since Town defence was as good as that – well done Mr Wagner.”

Philip (Wakefield) wrote: “A very good performance. They played as a team. Good well-taken goals by natural goalscorers. Wonderful support. A day to remember.”

James, in Mirfield, had similar feelings.

“The new players have gelled quickly and the team is one that I’m proud of watching and supporting this season.”
