TOWN were a mere 75 years old when work began on compiling the club’s soon-to-be-published centenary statistical history.
And the amount of research which has gone into the 384-page hardback offering is one of the reasons Ian Thomas, one of four Town diehards who have teamed up to produce ‘99 Years and Counting: Stats and Stories’ believes it will be one of the most comprehensive of its kind.
Club historian Thomas, his wife Gwen and statisticians John Ward and Alan Hodgson are the quartet who have pooled their vast knowledge of the club to come up with the first volume, which will be available from Thursday, October 18.
At the heart of the book, which is A4 sized and colour throughout, is a list of every match Town have played, including friendlies and, uniquely, Reserve matches (along with final tables).
Line-ups are provided for all league and major cup games and, unusually, the pages are colour coded for easy navigation.
As well as the stats, there are a host of other features, including details of every signing made by the club, every FA Youth Cup tie, penalties scored and missed, attendances, abandoned games and club officials.
In addition, the four have come up with 26 memorable matches and a string of Did You Know? features listing quirky events down the years.
Including 600 illustrations, many never seen before, the first volume covers the period up to the end of last season, with the current campaign to be featured in volume two, which will comprise a more traditional club history with a new tranche of pictures and will be published in another 12 months.
“We’ve been having regular get-togethers for the last two or three years, but in reality, the work has been going on far longer,” explained Thomas.
“You can never be 100% certain, but we’re hopeful we have details of every senior and second-team game the club has played.
“We’re also pleased with the way the book looks.
“We had a clear vision of what we wanted, and the designers have done an excellent job.”
