PAWEL ABBOTT today said a huge `thank you' to Town's fans for lifting his spirits.

The 22-year-old frontman has been down in the dumps since his blunder at Cheltenham effectively cost Town the chance of automatic promotion.

But his 75th-minute introduction as a Sincil Bank substitute was greeted with a tumultuous reception from Town's travelling army and the former Preston striker could not be more grateful.

"The fans giving me such a great reception and singing my name gave me a real buzz and a lift," said Abbott, who replaced Iffy Onuora for the closing stages.

"I was delighted with that after what happened the previous week and I'd like to thank each and every one of them.

"I did want to play from the start to try and make up for what I did, but that's the manager's decision, we won the game and I don't think anyone can argue.

"I really do want to make amends though. The winner in the final at Cardiff would do very nicely, I think."

So how bad did he feel after the Cheltenham mistake?

"I couldn't speak and it was just terrible," he said.

"Every time I think about it I just say to myself `why didn't you just boot it out for a throw-in or something.'

"It was a nightmare really and I've been down about it all week, but the manager put his arm around me and told me to get on with the business and then the fans brought be back to life with their reception.

"I just hope we can go on now and win promotion. It won't be easy but it would be a fantastic finish to the season."
