Nahki Wells says Huddersfield Town’s Portuguese trip will form a crucial phase of their build-up to the new Championship campaign.

Mark Robins and his squad jet out on Sunday for a seven-day stay at the Val de Lobo sporting complex which will take in friendlies against Doncaster on Tuesday and local side SC Portimonense next Saturday.

Town return in time to go to Guiseley on Monday, July 21.

Striker Wells, Town’s £1.3m club-record signing who notched seven goals after joining from Bradford City last January, said: “Pre-season is a time few players really enjoy, but we all know how important it is.

“We’ll be working hard out in Portugal, but we will have a change of scenery and the chance to really focus.

“Every day and every training session takes you a step closer to being ready for August (when Town kick-off their Championship campaign at home to Bournemouth).

“It’s the same with the friendlies – the results might not be of major importance, but every minute you get on the pitch matters.

“You have to make the most of each opportunity and ensure you stake a claim to be involved in the first league game and be ready to hit the ground running.”

England held a pre-World Cup training camp at Val de Lobo.

The complex has also been used by Real Madrid, Manchester United, Sunderland and Cardiff City.

FC Halifax host Barnsley in a friendly on Saturday, while Shelley take on top Northern Premier League side FC United of Manchester at Storthes Hall.
