Huddersfield Town suffered their first defeat of pre-season at Scunthorpe United as Paddy Madden's second-half winner sealed a 1-0 win for the Iron.

Town's best chance fell to Nahki Wells in the first half as he volleyed Tommy Smith's cross over the bar and Joe Lolley also went close to scoring, smacking the crossbar with a speculative cross.

But how did each player rate during the defeat at Glanford Park? Here are our player ratings.

Smithies: Made one impressive save from Myrie-Williams' low drive but looked to struggle from set pieces and failed to truly command his area. 6.

Peltier: Lined up as part of the three in central defence and, while he hardly put a foot wrong, he did go AWOL for the hosts' opener as Madden tucked home from close range. 6.

Wallace: Dealt with the large majority that came his way and was never seriously tested but skewed one clearance out of play and looked uncomfortable shuffling across to the right when Smith and/or Peltier ventured forwards. 5.

Lynch: Good with the ball at his feet but was troubled by the pace and direct nature of Jennison Myrie-Williams and only found joy in the aerial battles against the speedy winger. 6.

Smith: Adventurous presence on the right flank and found a good end product from out wide to provide a cross for Wells and a swerving strike which forced Sam Slocombe into a save. Replaced early in the second half. 6.

Hogg: Failed to get close enough to Sean McAllister and new Iron signing Neal Bishop to stop the Iron central midfield duo and was also guilty of failing to provide adequate protection for the defence. 5.

Clayton: Was not his usual driving self and was hindered by a lack of protection from the referee as he suffered multiple knocks. The midfielder's assing was also lacking in accuracy on occasion. 5.

Dixon: Got up and down the left flank regularly and was always an outlet for a crossfield ball but found himself pegged back more and more by the impressive Myrie-Williams. 6.

Lolley: Started very brightly in a central position and looked to get at defenders as often as he could by using his pace and agility but also showed an awareness of his duties in a slightly unfamiliar position. Impressive in the first half but gradually faded. 6.

Paterson: Has been linked with a move away from the club but failed to press any sort of claim that he should stay at the club as he produced a lethargic display typified best by his wayward second-half effort. 4.

Wells: Started well enough but - like some of his peers - disappeared as the match progressed and he was unable to show any sort of tangible partnership with Paterson. Snatched at the only meaningful Town chance with a miscued volley. 5.

Substitutes:

Scannell: Brought on to add an injection of pace which he managed but was not able to provide the telling pass required in Town's search for a leveller. 5.

Norwood: Immediately helped the Terriers crank things up a notch or two after arriving on the scene with some crisp passing and good movement. Impressive cameo. 6.

Hammill: Gave Town some much-needed width after emerging from the bench but, similarly to Scannell, a final product was lacking when he did engineer himself some space. 5.

Bunn: Was unable to truly get into the game alongside Wells and did not have time to make a noticeable impact on the game. 5.

Sinnott: Only came on for the closing stages and barely had a touch of the ball. 5.
