Newcastle United 1 Huddersfield Town 2

The team go over to applaud the fans high up to my left-hand side.....they will enjoy the rest of their time in Newcastle tonight.

Fair play to some of the Newcastle fans who have stayed to applaud Huddersfield’s players as well - they clearly recognise when a side have come here and played well for a result: Brave, fearless and full of fight, mixed with a bit of tactical genius from David Wagner.

I won’t get tired of saying this for awhile yet - Newcastle United 1 Huddersfield Town 2.

This is what it’s all about - get in their Town!!

Nearly Time...

Danny Ward with a goal kick he takes his time over....the ball is pinged back into the Huddersfield Town half but amounts to nothing as Dwight Gayle blazes miles wide...

Surely that must be it????

My nerves can’t take this - and I have money on the win as well!!

Adam Armstrong is brought on for Daryl Janmaat as the Magpies go in search for an equaliser...

Newcastle United 1 Huddersfield Town 2

Huddersfield Town are in full voice now - after Kasey Palmer has been wasteful in possession so far since coming on, he fights off Mbemba in midfield to release Jack Payne.

The diminutive midfielder still has a lot of work to do and his first touch takes him wide but he manages to still the ball past the Newcastle keeper.

St James’ Park is once again silenced!

YES YES YES!!

AFTER ALL THAT PRESSURE, BEING UNDER THE COSH - JACK PAYNE YOU LITTLE BEAUTY....HUDDERSFIELD RETAKE THE LEAD!!

COULD THIS BE A FANTASTIC SMASH AND GRAB RESULT FOR THE TERRIERS!!

  • Share

Substitution

David Wagner has clearly identified a need for an attacking outlet and decided to bring on Jack Payne for Joe Lolley.

Fan Reaction

Totally agree - Town are struggling to get any of the ball and when they do they waste it with Elias Kachunga ploughing a lone-furrow upfront at the minute.

Going to be a long 10 minutes....

  • Share

Palmer Possession

Has Kasey Palmer even touched the ball yet? Such is Huddersfield lack of possession since the youngster came on...

Oh wait, he just has - Aaron Mooy breaking up possession beautifully and releasing him.

But the on-loan Chelsea midfield wastes the chance to break with an over-hit ball in search of Elias Kachunga.

Groans are heard in the Terriers section of the Press Box.

Substitution

Mohamed Diame is off for Newcastle, replaced by Ayoze Perez.

  • Share

Substitution

Sean Scannell replaces Rajiv van La Parra who has been relatively anonymous this half - but then most of the Town forward line have.

The Terriers severely under the cosh with no real attacking outlet to speak of since Newcastle got their equaliser.

  • Share

Chance!

And it was nearly another goal for Newcastle there - Matt RItchie has been the difference this half for the Magpies and he sees his header go just wide from a great cross from Paul Dummett.

Town are stretched at the moment and keeper Danny Ward is having to come off his line far too often to clear danger...

At this point I’d definitely take a point.

Substitution

Nahki Wells, still coming back to full fitness, is replaced by Kasey Palmer as David Wagner tries to freshen things up with Newcastle now in the ascendancy.

Oh, and the Toon fans seemed to have found their voice too now - amazing that.

We Go Again

As I said at half-time, it’s a perverse saying but perhaps Town opened the scoring too early...?

Still, at 1-1 there is everything still to play for and Town just have to pick themselves up, weather this current Newcastle storm and go again.

And the penalty is converted by Dwight Gayle at the second attack - Danny Ward making a great save initially before the Magpie’s forward is quickest to react, heading the rebound in.

Penalty!!

Huddersfield are just letting Newcastle have a little bit too much possession and the referee awards a penalty to Newcastle after Janmaat’s cross bounces off Diame and onto the arm of Mark Hudson.

Unfortunate but was a penalty.

Definitely - and working to perfection at the minute...

  • Share

Toon Probing

Newcastle look like they got a Rafa Rollicking at half-time and have come out for the second 45 minutes really trying to exert some authority on the game.

But Town are so far more than resolute and looking threatening themselves on the counter-attack....

Half Time Analysis

Doug and I had a quick chat at the interval - here’s what we had to say about the opening 45 minutes.

Five minutes gone in the second period and it’s relatively even so far - no real chances to speak of...

  • Share

Attendance

Official attendance here today is 52,079 - no word on how many have travelled from West Yorkshire but I’d say a good 3,000....

  • Share

Second Half

The interval seems to get shorter and shorter every game!

Anyway, we’re back underway here and Newcastle have made a half-time change - Matt Ritchie coming on for Rolando Aarons.

No changes for Town

Newcastle United 0 Huddersfield Town 1

All the noise from the away end as Newcastle United fans sit in silence as they see Nahki Wells open the scoring for the Terriers.

Rajiv van La Parra plays a low cross into the area and the Bermudan curls a delightful left-footed strike into the bottom corner.

Right on the stroke of half-time, the whistle blows for the interval to a chorus of boos by the Newcastle fans.

For Huddersfield, David Wagner has executed the perfect game plan so far this game.
