WOOLDALE Wanderers are District League record-breakers.

The Holme Valley side beat neighbours Scholes 3-1 at the Galpharm Stadium last night to win their eighth Barlow Cup - one more than any other club in the League, past or present.

The match, played in front of 381 spectators, didn't really liven up until the second half when Tom Denton scored within two minutes of the restart.

But it still took some kicking into gear!

Several attackers had the opportunity to score and several defenders the chance to clear before Tom Denton finally poked the ball home from no more than a couple of yards.

Scholes responded and Malcolm Corcoran had a shot held while Christian Preece shot wide.

At the other end, Nathan Hall saved well from a Denton free kick, and the same player headed a corner from Richard Holmes over the top.

With time quickly running out Denton scored his second when David Gill's shot was blocked by Hall, but it rebounded to Denton who lashed it into the roof of the net in the 88th minute.

There was four minutes of time to be added on and Scholes threw everything at the Wooldale defence and their pressure was rewarded with a strike from Gary Osborne.

But just when they must have thought they were back in the game for a final push, Gill cut inside and beat three men with pace before ending his run with a clinical finish to make sure that victory and the record went to Wooldale.

The first half had little to recommend it. Denton hit the bar with a header but neither goalkeeper had much to do as passes went astray. The long ball dominated play and a lack of control let players down at crucial times just when openings appeared to have been created.

Ashley Coldwell made some good runs down the right for Scholes but the chances were not taken and Wooldale keeper Darren Peacock didn't have any really uncomfortable moments.

It looked like being one of those finals that are an anti-climax, but Denton's early second-half strike brought life into the game and his all-round effort earned him the man-of-the-match award, the Frank Beaumont Trophy.
