BLACKPOOL Football Club officials have assured travelling Town fans they will sit in safety at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

A Luton supporter was injured when part of the temporary East Stand which houses away fans gave way during the Coca-Cola League I match on August 28.

The man fell 10 feet, sustaining minor damage to a leg, during the accident which happened when Luton fans were celebrating a goal during their side's 3-1 win.

Part of the stand was evacuated and around 150 in the affected section were moved to a different part of the stadium, which is currently being redeveloped.

Town have sold all 1,900 tickets for the match, and Blackpool press officer Matt Williams insists there is no reason to worry about safety in the stand, which runs the length of a touchline.

"The only thing Huddersfield fans need be concerned about is staying dry if it rains, because the East Stand is uncovered," he said.

"The structure is simliar to the stands used at major golf events. The flooring is constructed from wooden boards and one had rotted, which is why it gave way.

"Repair work was obviously carried out immediately, and the whole structure is inspected by engineers from Blackpool Council before every game.

"It reopened for the next home match, against Swindon Town, and they have been fully satisfied the stand is safe ever since."

The stand was first erected in August last year and immediately caused controversy because Police did not believe it was safe enough.

But council bosses awarded it a safety certificate nevertheless.

A council spokesman said: "It is necessary for an independent body to extensively check the stand every three months to ensure it is structurally safe."

Blackpool, who have played at Bloomfield Road since 1899, announced in 2000 that they were to redevelop the decaying ground.

Phase one of the project, the construction of new West (up the touchline) and North Stands (on the site of the old Kop terracing), was completed in February 2002.

Work on phase two, a new South Stand at the Bloomfield Road end of the ground which will eventually house away fans, is due to start early in the New Year.

As yet, there are no plans to make the stadium four-sided.

Town are back at Blackpool for an LDV Vans Trophy second-round tie on Tuesday.
