Sean Scannell has signed a new Huddersfield Town contract through to 2017, with the club having the option of adding a further year.

It’s a big boost ahead of the home derby against Sheffield Wednesday, when the winger is set to make his 18th appearance of the season and 98th in total for the club.

Many believe Scannell, 24, signed by Simon Grayson from Crystal Palace for a reported £800,000 in the summer of 2012, has produced his best and most consistent form for Town under Chris Powell.

The manager urged the club to turn down a reported £300,000 offer from Millwall in the days immediately before his appointment in early September.

Scannell played 141 times for Palace after coming through their acclaimed youth system.

Powell said of Scannell’s new deal: “Having Sean commit his future to us should be a massive boost to everyone connected to the club.

“Since my arrival here, he is the player that I’ve been asked about more than any other.

“People consistently told me that he was somewhat of an enigma; an abundantly talented individual who had not always shown enough consistency.

“However, I have been delighted with everything about Sean’s game during my early time as manager.

“He’s a fantastic character who cares deeply about his football and has been very willing to put in the hard work on the training pitch and during matches to improve.

“It is also clear to me that Sean enjoys this Club and life in Yorkshire.

“I think we’ve seen the evidence of his ability and hard work out on the pitch over the last two months; at times he has been unplayable.

“Sean’s senior career started at a very young age at Crystal Palace and it’s important to remember he has only just turned 24.

“He’s still a young player and he can improve further, which is an exciting prospect.

“The key to success for Sean is consistency and it’s important he keeps working hard with the technical staff at the Club to achieve that.

“As everyone knows, we try to do our business quietly at Huddersfield Town and a lot of hard work has been going on behind the scenes in respect of Sean, following on from Joel Lynch, Harry Bunn and Murray Wallace all signing extended contracts recently.”
