TOP of District League Division II beat bottom of Division I as the District FA Saturday Challenge Cup got under way.
Sovereign Sports, riding high in the Second Division, beat Slaithwaite United, second bottom in the top flight, 2-1 at Deighton.
Following a goalless first half, Sovereign took the lead with a Kirk Smith penalty, and the same player put them 2-0 up with a well-taken individual goal.
The home side then had numerous chances to put the issue beyond doubt but poor finishing and bad luck kept the score at 2-0.
Slaithwaite scored with two minutes to go through Howes to set up a frantic last-gasp bid for an equaliser, but the home defence was always in charge and Sovereign were well worth their win.
Marsh Liberal were brought back down to earth with a bang following the previous week’s victory over Rollinson Cup holders GNG Sikh Temple.
This time it was the District FA Sunday Cup but it brought a different result as they were beaten 4-0 by Kirklees side Britannia Sports.
Their was no score in the first half but then Sports got their act together and scored four times for victory.
Another Kirklees side, Athletico Monkey, visited Sunday League Wellington and came home with a 3-2 win after extra time, with Eddy Hamlet and Dan Waddington on target for the losers.
Waterloo BC also put in a useful performance to beat Sunday League outfit Slaithwaite Athletic 6-2 with prolific striker Dave Woffenden netting four times. Seventeen-year-old Danny Gore also got on the scoresheet for the first time and the other was an own goal.
Struggling Marsh United were no match for Heavy Woollen side Towngate and lost 15-0 with Adam Clayton and Lee Ryan netting hat tricks, and others coming from Irfane Khan (2), Elliott Williams (2), Charlie Bradshaw (2), Scott Ryan, Simpson and Taylor.
Sunday League Division II side Honley Socialist were no match for Division I leaders Team Forward and Richard Bray scored their solitary goal.
