A queue of suitors are understood to be tracking Huddersfield Town striker Joe Lolley.

The 22-year-old frontman has implied on social media he’s unhappy at getting limited game time at the John Smith’s Stadium – something interested clubs will have picked up on.

After a weekend when chairman Dean Hoyle told fans that defender Anthony Gerrard could be set to leave the club – deadline is Monday night at 11pm, although the loan window opens a week later – Lolley increasingly looks to be getting frustrated at his lack of opportunity, even as a substitute.

He went on in the final minute of Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat by Leeds United and didn’t touch the ball, and soon after the derby had finished there were rumours of a loan to Walsall for the Redditch-born player.

I understand that is highly unlikely because a number of Championship clubs are tracking the highly-rated attacker, who made a rapid rise through non-League football with Littleton and Kidderminster Harriers.

That should be no surprise because Lolley has had precious little meaningful match action since Chris Powell took charge in September and his only goal came in the Capital One Cup at Chesterfield when Mark Lillis was caretaker boss.

Other fringe players have also been shipped out like Jon Stead, Danny Ward, Adam Hammill (loan), Lee Peltier and Martin Paterson, while only David Edgar has been signed on loan, so clubs are known to be sniffing round.

Joe Lolley

They could be set to test Town over Lolley, as they might think the club could be ready to cash in and cut losses by selling him – or even loaning him – as Powell remodels his squad and trims numbers.

While Lolley’s old boss Mark Robins at Scunthorpe is understood to be interested, League I rivals Oldham Athletic have also shown interest in the past and could also be ahead of Walsall.

Among Championship clubs, Stuart Gray at Sheffield Wednesday, with their new owners, are known to like Lolley, as are Leeds United (with the Steve Thompson link) and Rotherham.

Aston Villa fan Lolley, meanwhile, might favour a return to his home area with Birmingham City, who had him on their books as a youngster.

Long-time admirers Peterborough United, too, would surely jump at the chance to land him after being beaten by Town to his signature last year – just a day after his goal knocked Posh out of the FA Cup.

Lolley’s departure would leave Town light on the flanks, but Sean Scannell and Harry Bunn seem permanent fixtures under Powell, so that minor back-up or injury-cover role could possibly go to someone with solid experience to help close-out games, which Town have struggled to do – giving up points to Middlesbrough, Charlton, Rotherham and, only on Saturday, Leeds United.

In the past, the club have talked about pathways for development players like Lolley, but with the route to a first-team start seeming to be blocked by Scannell and Bunn right now and, after the departures of others who had little or no game time under Powell, could it be that Lolley might be next?
