Huddersfield Town have made another move to shape their squad for next season.

Chairman Dean Hoyle has confirmed the signing of a player from a German club on a pre-contract agreement.

Town are remaining tight-lipped on the identity and position.

The development follows the arrival on loan of Wolves winger Rajiv van La Parra ahead of a permanent £750,000 summer switch.

The Dutchman will sign a three-year contract, with the John Smith’s Stadium club having the option of a further 12 months.

It’s no surprise to see Town’s German head coach David Wagner, who is approaching his first close-season in England, turn to his native land to recruit players.

The 44-year-old former Mainz and Schalke striker had more than three years in charge of Borussia Dortmund’s second team, so knows the country’s football scene well.

He has already brought in Algerian international forward Karim Matmour, who spent a decade playing in Germany.

Town’s head of football operations Stuart Webber says the European market is of real interest.

“It was one of the reasons for bringing in David as coach,” he said.

“We are finding it harder to compete in the English market for English players, even from the lower leagues.

“We have to be open-minded to European players, and having a European coach helps.

“For various reasons, a lot of English coaches don’t want foreign players.

“We have to go into that market. It’s a risk, but we have to balance risk and rewards.”

Players can hold pre-contract talks with other clubs when they are into the final six months of their current deal.

Wagner, meanwhile, has until 5pm on Thursday to make any loan additions to his squad for the remainder of this season.

Van La Parra’s arrival means the club have six loan players, only five of which can be used in any one game.

Left-back James Husband will return to Middlesbrough when his loan reaches it’s maximum 93-day length after Town’s home game against Hull City on Saturday, April 9.

The others on loan are goalkeeper Jed Steer, midfielers Emyr Huws, Jamie Paterson and Elvis Manu.
