Adam Clayton certainly picked his moment to score his first ever goal for Middlesbrough.

The midfielder left Huddersfield Town fans brokenhearted when he opened the scoring at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday after just eight minutes - the first time he has found the net in 70 appearances since making the switch to the North East in August 2014.

His strike proved crucial, allowing Boro to sit back and soak up the pressure on their way to a 2-0 win, settled by Emilio Nsue’s late finish.

Town fans will feel some justified frustration that Clayton ended his drought on his return to Yorkshire, but he’s far from the only player to come back to haunt his former side.

Here are six Huddersfield players that struck for Town against their old employers...

Adam Clayton v Leeds

It’s not the first time that Manchester-born Adam Clayton has turned from hero to villain in the eyes of supporters.

The midfielder signed permanently for Leeds in 2010 after an initial loan spell from Manchester City, and spent two years on the books at Elland Road, making 41 appearances and netting six goals.

Former Leeds boss Simon Grayson brought him to Huddersfield in July 2012 and he immediately proved his worth, becoming a mainstay in the side and playing nearly a century of games.

Six months into his stay, Leeds visited the John Smith’s Stadium for a frenetic Yorkshire derby.

With the visitors leading 2-1 heading into half time, Luciano Becchio drew the referee’s ire with a pull on skipper Peter Clarke in the area, and Clayton calmly sent keeper Paddy Kenny the wrong way.

Much to the delight of Town fans he sprinted half the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of his old manager, Neil Warnock, who had sold him the previous summer.

Unfortunately, Leeds went on to score twice more without reply in the second period, but that goal continues to live long in the memory.

Grant Holt and Joel Lynch v Nottingham Forest

Huddersfield Town (3) v Nottingham Forest (0) - Grant Holt scores Town's third goal.

Now on loan with Wolves, Grant Holt enjoyed a 15-game spell at the John Smith’s Stadium last term.

He netted just twice for Town during that period - but made sure that one of them came against former side Forest in the November 2014 encounter.

However, his goal was slightly overshadowed by defender Joel Lynch, who took just 44 seconds to silence the away end with a strong header past Darlow in the Forest net.

Nahki Wells doubled Town’s advantage before Holt made his mark on the 54th minute, effectively curtailing the visitors’ hopes of a comeback just as they were beginning to threaten.

Played out of position on the wing by the Reds for the majority of the 2007-08 season before being sold to Shrewsbury Town, Holt undoubtedly relished his second half strike and he is remembered fondly at the John Smith’s Stadium for his role in reversing Town’s fortunes and helping the team avoid the drop.

James Vaughan v Norwich

Huddersfield Town v Norwich City. Sky Bet Championship. John Smith's Stadium, Huddersfield. James Vaughan celebrates putting Town ahead in extra time only to be sent off for removing his shirt.

Sent off for celebrating a goal against a former side - it can only be James Vaughan in a clash with the Canaries in March 2015 that no Town fan is likely to forget.

Vaughan exploded onto the English football scene by becoming the Premier League’s youngest ever goalscorer on his top-flight debut for Everton at the age of 16.

However, a succession of injuries limited his impact with the Toffees, and he signed for Huddersfield Town in 2013 following a successful loan spell from Norwich City.

With the scores locked at 1-1, Vaughan combined with fellow Norwich old-boy Jacob Butterfield to score what everyone though had to be the winning goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Clearly sharing the ecstasy evident in the stands, Vaughan was then shown a second yellow for what - by the letter of the law - was deemed an “over exuberant” celebration by the referee. Reduced to ten men for the final minutes of the longest period of added on minutes in recent memory, Huddersfield hearts were broken when substitute Jamar Loza took full advantage with the latest of levellers.

Chris Hay v Swindon

Scottish striker Chris Hay swapped Swindon for Huddersfield at the turn of the century and few could forget his former allegiances in February 2002, when he popped up to score the only goal of the game at the County Ground.

Flying high under boss Lou Macari, the Terriers were unbeaten in five games when they travelled to meet Hay’s former side.

The Glaswegian forward struggled for goals that season, but netted in the 54th minute to hand Town the full complement of points. He only scored once more for the club before moving back north of the border to St Johnstone - a fact that was unlikely to have escaped the despairing Swindon fans, who watched their club finish 13th in Division Two.

Adam Hammill v Barnsley

Huddersfield Town (5) v Barnsley (0) - Adam Hammill celebrates his goal.

Another who signed for the Terriers permanently after impressing on loan, Adam Hammill spent two years with the club before being released last September.

Converted to a very promising wing back during that time, he got on the scoresheet as part of a red-letter day for Huddersfield in March 2014, when Nahki Wells inspired the side to a 5-0 thumping of Barnsley.

The team’s last victory in a Yorkshire Derby, Wells grabbed four assists as Town- including an incisive pass for Hammill to haunt his former side with the third goal of the afternoon.

The Tykes were relegated at the end of 2013/14 campaign, but obviously didn’t bear a grudge against Hammill, who returned to Oakwell two months’ ago.
