THE Huddersfield Town Sporting Club are planning a star-studded Sunday lunch as their latest fund-raiser for Town's Development Association.

BBC Look North presenter Christa Ackroyd joins comedy scriptwriter Mike Craig and former McAlpine chief executive Paul Fletcher as guest speakers.

The luncheon, on Sunday, September 26 at the Galpharm Stadium, is open to men and women with tickets priced £25 each or £250 for a table of 10, with reductions for Sporting Club members.

Organiser George Binns explains that proceeds from the lunch will go towards supporting youngsters at Town from aged nine to 16.

"The Development Association, originally formed in 1970, has recently undertaken the challenging and enormously important task of independently funding Town's youth football Academy.

"Town's 2003-04 campaign, after rising like a phoenix from the ashes of administration, highlighted the need to rely very heavily indeed on products of the Academy, which while very efficiently run, costs well in excess of £500,000 each year."

The Sporting Club, which meets on selected Mondays throughout the year at the stadium, hope to repeat the success of a luncheon in 2001 when almost 400 attended to raise valuable funds for Sportsaid, which helps fund athletes moving to national and international level but who struggle financially.

Christa Ackroyd is a familiar face on BBC's Look North programme which she co-presents with Harry Gration and she is also a Sunday newspaper columnist.

Mike Craig, a former scriptwriter for Morecambe and Wise shows, is a popular after-dinner speaker and described as "a very, very, funny man."

Paul Fletcher, the former Burnley and Bolton footballer, was chief executive when Town's McAlpine Stadium opened 10 years ago.

He is currently in a similar role at Coventry City's new stadium, the Jaguar Arena, and is a much sought-after speaker on the sporting after-dinner circuit.

Tickets can be obtained from George Binns or Jaine Binns on 01484 450000, extn 2203.
