Steve Eyre is being tipped to take a higher-profile role in a new-look Huddersfield Town management team.

First-team coach Steve Taylor and head of performance Darren Robinson have left the club.

Boss Mark Robins, who says he needed to “freshen things up” on the coaching front, is now assessing his options.

That could mean bringing in a new face, but current Town Under 21 and former Manchester City youth coach and Rochdale manager Eyre could also step up.

The Salford-born 41-year-old, recently rumoured to be a target of Leeds, is both highly regarded and experienced.

A one-time Burnley and Wigan youth player, his hopes of playing in the Football League were cut short by injury.

But he turned out for a string of non-league clubs, most notably Chorley.

He had 21 years on the City coaching staff, leading his charges to five junior titles and two FA Youth Cup final appearances, winning the competition in 2008.

His proteges included Micah Richards, Daniel Sturridge and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

He managed Rochdale between June and December 2011.

Eyre joined Town to run their new Under 21 side two years ago.

He has led the team to the Professional Development League II play-offs in both his seasons at the helm, and Town were North section champions this year.

Former Derby player Taylor also worked with Robins at Rotherham, Barnsley and Coventry.

Triathlon competitor Robinson’s previous clubs include Coventry, Derby, Nottingham Forest and Hull.

He has also worked for the Football association, the Rugby League and Loughborough University, which is renowned in sport.

Robins: “The decision was incredibly difficult to make.

“I have worked with Steve and Darren for a long time and they are both close personal friends.

“But the decision is in the best interests of Huddersfield Town and the club’s future.

“As we develop and progress, it’s natural that on occasion it is the right thing to freshen things up on the coaching side as well as with player comings and goings.

“Steve and Darren have both done terrific jobs in their time here, but we now need to move on.

“I will take as long as I need in making my new appointments.

“The people that join us will play an important part in the next phase of our progression.”
