DETERMINATION, teamwork, focus and discipline – just some of the qualities which helped Underbank claim an impressive Conference National play-off win at Dewsbury Celtic.

At full-time, cheers rang around Crow Nest Park from the Rangers supporters and staff who witnessed a terrific victory.

Since the start of August, heavy underdogs Underbank have managed to win only once in six league outings and had failed to beat Dewsbury on two previous occasions this season.

Reflecting on the win, coach Aaron Perrin said: “We knew that it was all or bust for us.

“If we lost, it was the end of our season, so we knew we had to step up to the mark. Last time we played them, they wanted it more than us but in this game we wanted it more than them.”

Potentially, Underbank are now just three games away from a play-off grand final and will travel to face Warrington Wizards on Saturday.

In their win at Dewsbury, both sides started the game in an eager mood, defending aggressively and attacking with intent.

But, after just one minute, a dangerous challenge by Rangers gave away a penalty which James Eatherley accurately kicked.

Then, only three minutes later, the home side increased their lead when Dom Bryne found space out wide, sneaked passed Underbank’s defence and scored the game’s first try, but Eatherley failed with the conversion.

After a poor beginning, Rangers suddenly started to believe in themselves and began playing like a rejuvenated side.

And they were rewarded when Dave Edwards scored two tries in quick succession. John Birt, who set up each try, converted both.

Monopoly of the game continued to swap from one side to the other when, after uncertain Rangers defending, Eatherley scored Celtic’s second try.

But, after a failed conversion attempt, the home team yet again allowed Underbank to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Birt successfully kicked a penalty from almost straight in front of the posts.

In terms of the remainder of the game, the home side were dealt a significant blow after 39 minutes, when, following a converted penalty kick for Dewsbury, Scott Green was sent off after a head-butt on a Rangers player, reducing them to 12 men.

Rangers capitalised on their player advantage when, early in the second half Jamie Tarazi and James Price scored a try apiece. Birt failed to convert both.

During a period where tempers were boiling over between the sides, after 60 minutes Rob Senior and Matt Hirst were sent to the sin-bin.

Yet the temporary loss of one man failed to have a detrimental affect on the visitors. Four minutes later, Perrin scored a deserved try and then, in one of the game’s most impressive moves, Tom Senior ran the length of the field to score. From an awkward angle, Birt’s conversion attempt just carried enough power to register.

After 79 minutes, and almost straight after returning from the sin-bin, Danny Thomas touched down in what turned out to be nothing more than a consolation try for Dewsbury.

Looking ahead to their next play-off tie, Perrin explained: “We still have a lot of work to do ahead of the Warrington game.

“For example, we still made a lot of mistakes (against Dewsbury) like getting a bit impatient attacking their line.”
