Town need to summon up the spirit of 1978 when they face Watford.

The Hertfordshire have been beaten six times in 11 league games in this part of West Yorkshire.

And the most impressive came as the Hornets were romping towards the Fourth Division title under Graham Taylor.

They arrived at Leeds Road on March 14, 1978 top of the table and unbeaten in 14 league games.

Taylor, who had led Lincoln City to the Division IV title two seasons earlier, had assembled an entertaining side.

It included the likes of Ross Jenkins, Alan Mayes, Keith Mercer and Alan Garner.

Town, managed by Tom Johnston were 10th.

But they upset the form book to seal a 1-0 win, Terry Gray scoring in front of 6,603.

It was Watford’s fifth and final defeat of the season.

Promotion was won alongside Southend United, Swansea City and Wrexham. Town finished 11th.

The others on duty against Watford were Alan Starling, Malcolm Brown, Phil Sandercock, Ian Holmes, Dave Sutton, Arnie Sidebottom, Mick Butler, Peter Hart, Terry Eccles and Kevin Johnson. The substitute was Wayne Goldthorpe.
