Both teams were packed with experienced pros – Tom Denton did not get into the action – in an entertaining game, with Town eventually holding onto the lead at the third attempt.

Malvin Kamara opened the scoring for Mick Docherty’s side with a rare headed goal before the first equaliser, but a brace from Phil Jevons proved enough to give Town victory.

Sierra Leone international Kamara opened the scoring on 14 minutes, sending a looping header over Leeds goalkeeper Alan Martin. But former Northampton midfielder Bradley Johnson soon levelled with a diving header (25).

Lively striker Jevons netted the first of his two goals with a 35th-minute penalty after he had been brought down, but the teams went in level when Argentinean striker Luciano Becchio scored his own spot-kick after a foul by Tom Clarke.

The second-half was played at a similarly frenetic pace, but Jevons grabbed the only goal after 68 minutes when he tapped home from close in.

Johnson hit the bar for Leeds with a dipping 20-yard volley, but not before Jevons had gone close just before Town’s third with a curling free-kick that rebounded off the woodwork.

Trialists Paul Gerrard and James Smith both did well.

Town – Gerrard, Smith, Skarz, T Clarke, N Clarke, Unsworth (Killock 61), Kamara, Collins (Codman 61), Beckett, Jevons, Parker ( Broadbent 61). Unused subs: Smithies, Denton.
