LEE CLARK has backed Simon Eastwood to make a success of his move to Oxford United.

Town’s 20-year-old keeper has signed a two-year deal with the Football League newcomers after being made available for transfer by the Galpharm club.

No fee is involved for former England junior international Eastwood, who made just one senior Town appearance and was under contract for another year.

Clark, who has put seven other players on the transfer list, said: “I’d like to wish Eastie all the best at Oxford.

“It’s a good club with good people and hopefully he can make a good career for himself there playing first team football.”

Eastwood, who has had loan spells at Woking and Bradford City, will contest the keeper’s spot at Oxford with Ryan Clarke.

Manager Chris Wilder, who led his side to Wembley glory against York in the Blue Square Premier play-off final, explained: “With Billy Turley moving on, it was crucial we signed another goalkeeper and we’re delighted Simon has joined us.

“He’s hungry to do well and I’m sure he’ll prove a valuable asset for the club. Despite his age, he has Football League experience, and he’ll ensure the goalkeeping position is hotly contested.”

l Former Notts County captain Craig Short has been made manager of Town’s new League I rivals. He was previously in charge of Hungary’s Ferencvaros.
