STAN TERNENT was today continuing the hunt for a fifth summer signing with the message: “I want to build a squad, not just a team.”

Last week’s addition of centre-backs Andy Butler and Chris Lucketti means the Galpharm manager has five senior centre-backs.

He wants to replicate that sort of competition for places in every area as he plots promotion from League I and explained: “I want options, both in my team selection and the system we play.

“With the number of season-tickets sold (16,123) and the fact that it’s our centenary, we’re dealing with high expectation levels.

“We have to be competitive, and the only way to do that is to create an all-round strong squad.”

Ternent, who is going into his first full week of pre-season training, says he has “two or three irons in the fire” to add to existing captures Lucketti, who has been named as captain for 2008-09, Butler, Jim Goodwin and Keigan Parker.

But he warned: “Experience has taught me you have to be patient, because it’s no good bringing in someone for the sake of it.

“At this stage, I’m happy with our progress so far. In my view, the four lads who have come in are what I’d term complete and utter no-risk signings.

“With the standard of players I’ve inherited, I consider myself to be in a lucky position, but there are still some improvements we can make.

“In an ideal world, everything would be done and dusted by now so that we could have everyone together for the whole pre-season programme.

“But things don’t always work out like that, and with the transfer window system as it is, it could be that the search goes on until the end of August.”
