TOWN look like losing out on Ashley Westwood.

The released Sheffield Wednesday defender is travelling on Monday for talks with Town's Third Division rivals Northampton.

The big-spending M1 club, who have already pinched striker Martin Smith from the McAlpine, seem ready to offer Westwood a two-year deal.

Town chief Peter Jackson can table only a one-year offer to the 27-year-old former Crewe and Bradford centre back, who has been in training at Storthes Hall.

"It's very frustrating and it will be bitterly disappointing if we lose Ashley like this because we need to bring in a couple of central defenders," said Jackson.

"With Northampton coming in, though, it casts a big doubt over whether we will be able to sign him."

Jackson continues to have positive talks with midfield man Chris Holland, who looks likely to rejoin the club, and he is waiting for developments over this weekend on his interest in Oldham midfield star Tony Carss.
