FOOTBALL fans love a no-nonsense midfielder – and Jon Worthington is the latest in a line to have won the hearts of Town supporters.

One of the most popular members of the celebrated 1969-70 Division II title-winning team was tenacious Scot Jimmy McGill.

Signed for a snip from Arsenal in September 1967, he was an ever-present in the last team to take Town to the top flight.

Town pocketed £55,000 – £45,000 more than they paid for him – but there was still widespread disappointment when he joined Hull City in October 1971.

By the time Town next won promotion, in 1979-80, they had plummeted all the way down to Division IV.

Central to the side who got the club on the rise again was Peter Hart, who had shown his potential as part of the Town side which got to the final of the FA Youth Cup in 1974.

Hart was surprisingly transferred to Walsall in the wake of the Fourth Division title success.

His replacement as ball winner was Mick Kennedy, who had a two-season stint after a £50,000 switch from Halifax Town.

Then came Steve Doyle, who was recruited from Preston and gave four years’ sterling service before heading to Sunderland.

Think of Town’s Wembley play-off success under Neil Warnock in 1995, and Darren Bullock is one of the names which comes to mind.

The Leeds Road boss unearthed a more-than-useful player when he paid Nuneaton £55,000 in November 1993, and Swindon parted with £400,000 to take him to Wiltshire in February 1997.

Meanwhile experienced Wales international Barry Horne played a huge part in Town’s great escape from relegation from the Championship in 1997-98.
