GOLCAR United left it late to celebrate a second semi-final slot in successive weeks.

Only in the final three minutes of extra-time did goals from skipper Liam Rothery and substitute Nathan Trew take United past 10-man West Yorkshire League side Bardsey.

They now join Bay Athletic in the semi-finals of the West Riding FA Challenge Cup, having reached the last four of the West Riding County Amateur League Cup the previous week.

Holders Bay beat Leeds Carnegie 3-2 after extra-time with goals from Kitson Gayle, Freddie McGillivary and Steve Perrin.

Storthes Hall lost 2-1 to Wibsey in their semi, despite a goal from Matthew Mulvihill.

Golcar's was a cracking tie played at a fierce pace.

Bardsey had the early pressure with Robert Dickinson breaking into the area for a stinging shot which was denied by a superb fingertip save from Greg Wadsworth.

The visitors went close again with a free-kick before Golcar's first real chance, a sweet break leading to a shot from Chris Fawcett which was well saved by goalkeeper Ian Philliskirk.

While Rothery was inspiring United, centre-backs Michael Hills and Bill Hedley were playing well for Bardsey - but the Leeds side were rocked on 31 minutes when midfielder Justin Gilmore was dismissed for kicking out at Rob Morris.

United pressed forward immediately and Adam Johnson was sent clear by a precision pass from Danny Senior, but he placed the ball inches wide.

Gareth Miller blasted a free-kick over the Golcar bar but, in the second half, the visitors slowed things down and clearly hoped to hit United on the break while soaking up any pressure.

Gary Moulson made three tactical substitutions, sending on influential midfielder Simon Ollerenshaw and pacy duo Trew and Ben Powis.

Rothery and Trew went close in the closing stages, but the game went into extra-time and then looked to be heading for penalties until those two late strikes.

The first came from a Paul Cartwright corner and Rothery climbed high above the Bardsey defence to power home a great header - much to the relief of home fans.

Then, in the last minute, Trew broke down the right and scored with a floating, angled shot which completely deceived the keeper.
