CARLING Cup first-round elimination by Northampton meant Millwall went into today’s clash against Town with the benefit of a free week.

But byes in the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy means both Town and Cheltenham will be without a midweek game ahead of next Saturday’s meeting at Whaddon Road.

The draw for the second round takes place on the morning of the match, with Town through to that stage for the first time since 2004-05.

A 3-0 first-round win over then non-league Morecambe set up a trip to Blackpool, where there were nine goals, Town finishing on the wrong end of a 6-3 scoreline.

This week’s eight Northern section ties are Crewe v Macclesfield, Hartlepool v Leicester, Leeds v Bradford, Oldham v Morecambe, Scunthorpe v Notts County, Stockport v Port Vale and Tranmere v Accrington on Tuesday and Chesterfield v Grimsby on Wednesday.

Bury, Carlisle, Chester, Darlington, Lincoln, Rochdale and Rotherham were the other Northern sides to receive byes.

Town’s Carling Cup conquerors Sheffield United were set to discover their third-round opponents when the draw took place today.
