TOWN might have remained second in League I - but they could have been three rather than one point clear of third-placed Barnsley.
Like Town, the Reds had to make do with a 2-2 home draw, in their case, against Swansea, who went fourth because Colchester crashed 3-0 at home to leaders Southend.
Boss Andy Ritchie blasted Barnsley, who came from behind, then threw away a lead - and the chance to climb above Town.
Andy Robinson put Swansea ahead after 48 minutes before Daniel Nardiello and Marc Richards responded with two quick goals around the hour.
The second came from the spot, with Kristian O'Leary red carded for the foul, but Swansea still managed to level through Lee Trundle after 64 minutes.
"We switched off twice and they made us pay," said Ritchie.
First-half goals by Freddy Eastwood, skipper Kevin Maher and Che Wilson in the battle of the Essex boys put Southend five points ahead of Town.
