PETERBOROUGH boss Darren Ferguson dedicated his side’s win to chairman Darragh MacAnthony – and said he was delighted to be able to give his dad Sir Alex something to smile about.

Ferguson said his father, whose Manchester United side suffered defeat by Barcelona in Saturday’s Champions League final at Wembley, had been in contact soon after the final whistle.

“I wanted to get a smile back on his face, and I think I’ve done that,” said the 39-year-old boss after Peterborough returned to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Ferguson won two promotions in his first spell as manager of Posh, returning in January after he parted company with Preston and Gary Johnson left London Road.

“I’m delighted for the chairman, who has backed all his managers and showed bottle in bringing me back here,” added Ferguson, who said he took no satisfaction from Preston’s relegation to League I.

“I think what won us this game was that we didn’t concede in that spell in the second half when Huddersfield, who are a good team with a good manager, had a right go at us.”

Ferguson is resigned to losing Craig Mackail-Smith, who got Posh’s second goal to take his season’s tally to 35 and his overall haul for the club to 99.

“He’s a great player and a great lad, and I wish him all the best,” he said.
