LEE CLARK sends Huddersfield Town into Johnstone’s Paint Trophy action at Northampton tomorrow night telling them: “We want to reach Wembley!”

Stung by last season’s exit to Carlisle just one step from the national final, Clark has underlined there is no chance Town will be taking tomorrow’s first-round tie lightly at Sixfields (7.45).

Changes are on the cards after Saturday’s splendid 3-0 win over Wycombe thanks to Alan Lee’s double and Gary Roberts, but Clark has spelled out exactly what he wants from his squad and the competition.

“We are going to try and go one better than last time, it’s as simple as that,” said Clark, who has skipper Peter Clarke (back) ruled out and Damien Johnson (knee) ready to make his comeback in a practice match against Middlesbrough on Wednesday.

“Losing to Carlisle and missing out on Wembley was one of the huge disappointments of last season because you get so few chances to go there in this game.

“I’ve been there before and it’s a marvellous arena, so to try and get the chance to manage a team there is a huge incentive.

“So we’ll be fielding a team tomorrow that I believe can win us the tie and go on and get to Wembley and be successful.”

Clark added: “When you look at the support we took to Old Trafford for the play-off final last season, the amount of fans we’d take to Wembley would be fantastic, and the finance it would generate would benefit the club.

“It would also be a marvellous experience for the players. These lads don’t know if they will ever get a move to a big club to be involved in big occasions, or whether they will stay here and be involved in big occasions, but this is an opportunity to go through a competition and play in a big game at Wembley Stadium and it’s a great opportunity.”

Clark expects League II Northampton to be driven by the same objectives under manager Gary Johnson and added:

“It is going to be a tough game.

“We’ve drawn the most southerly club in the Northern Section, giving us a few more miles to do after the Carling Cup trip to Cardiff, but we are looking forward to it.

“We know our objective right at the outset is to get to the final and win it and so we are going to go to Northampton with that attitude.”
