WAKEFIELD FC managing director Pete Bevils has pledged to ensure the College Grove pitch is in tip-top condition by the time Town finally play there.

The two clubs say there will be a rearrangement after Saturday’s scheduled friendly – a major money-spinner for the former Emley – was postponed at the last minute because it was feared the hard and bumpy surface could have caused injuries.

Now the race is on to ensure the one-time home of the now defunct Wakefield rugby union club, home to Evo-Stik (Northern Premier) League club Wakefield FC since 2005, is ready for the visit of Leeds United on Tuesday, August 3.

“It’s very disappointing. There’s little we can do about there being no rain, but we possibly underestimated the damage done by the recent hot spell,” said Bevils.

“We completely understand Lee Clark’s position. We held the same view, and the decision to call the game off was taken jointly by Lee, our manager Ronnie Glavin and the referee.

“Lee has said he will bring a strong side for the rearranged game. We will sit down with Town and fix up a date. Tickets will be valid and there will be refunds for those who can’t make it.

“We have a great relationship with Huddersfield Town and I’m sure that will continue.”
