Heavy rain showers throughout failed to put a dampener on the meeting of the two bottom sides ad Deighton scored a 3-2 victory at Netherton in the RCD League Under 12 Division II.

Netherton started the stronger but they were unable to break through the Deighton defence of Zubair Sharis, Ashley Ndlovu, Romell Simpson and Jayven Lockwood and their inability to find the net was soon to prove costly.

Deighton soon began to turn their fortunes around and Lockwood was unlucky to see his long-range shot cleared off the line, but Netherton could only scramble the ball to the edge of the area where Josh Wright fired through a crowded goalmouth to open the scoring for the visitors (0-1).

The goal inspired Deighton, who forced Netherton into long periods of defending and, despite some strong tackling by Jack Howlett and the excellent Luke McLaughlin, the visitors doubled their advantage when a perfect pass from Kayden Oates found Josh Wright who calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the net (0-2).

Netherton were struggling and in serious danger of allowing the game to run away from them but some excellent works between the sticks by keeper Ethan Denton kept the score unchanged until minutes before the half time break, when Nathan Bennett swept home a Wright near-post cross to leave Deighton with a very comfortable half time lead of three goals.

A change of ends did nothing to stop the rain but Jack McGowan, Elliott Lees, Louis Baldwin-Wood and McLaughlin did what was necessary to stop the Deighton attack and their work paid off five minutes after the break when a Lees deflected shot wrong footed keeper Theo Jones to nestle in the corner of the net (1-3).

With the game now swinging rapidly from end to end, Deighton forced a series of corners but Liam Whiteley and Colby Regis were unable to convert a couple of good chances and keeper Denton kept himself warm with a handful of fine saves to keep the visitors out.

As the game progressed, Netherton continued to grow stronger and their belief that they might get something from the game found a new level when Sam Winterburn’s cross found McLoughlin who made no mistake from eight yards (2-3).

Netherton laid siege on the Deighton goal in the closing minutes and almost pulled off a remarkable comeback when James Burhouse latched onto a Robert Greenwood corner only to see his flicked shot roll inches wide.

Deighton were the stronger side throughout and fully deserved their victory but, had Netherton produced in the middle of the game what they produced at the beginning and end, it might have been a different story.
