Middlesbrough are back in the hunt for Huddersfield Town's Adam Clayton.

The Town midfielder has been strongly linked with Brighton, but it's believed Boro have resurrected their interest in the former Leeds man.

They were in for the 25-year-old earlier this summer, with suggestions of a player, possibly midfielder Jacob Butterfield or striker Kei Kamara, coming the other way as part of any deal.

Selling Clayton would mean Town make money on a man who could leave for nothing in another year.

Brighton had a £1m bid rejected last January, and have since come back with an improved offer for a player who cost £350,000 from Leeds two years ago.

The Manchester City product has had 94 Town outings, scoring 12 goals, and was the club's Player of the Year last season.

South coast sources had suggested Brighton, with money to spend after the £8m sale of striker Leo Ulloa to Leicester, were confident of getting their man.

But Boro, who made a test-the-water bid of just over £1m earlier this close-season, have remained in the chase.

Town host Newcastle tonight in their final friendly ahead of a Championship campaign which starts at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Northumberland's Scott Duncan will referee that game.
