Sky Sports News are reporting that former Huddersfield Town defender Peter Clarke is closing in on signing for Doncaster Rovers, as the Examiner told you first last weekend.

Former captain Clarke is available on a free transfer after being allowed to leave Town along with seven other out-of-contract players earlier this summer.

Fans' favourite Clarke, who made 224 appearances during his five years with the Terriers, has also been linked with moves to fellow League One sides Fleetwood Town, Barnsley and Preston North End but seems set to join Donny to lead their quest for an immediate return to the Championship.

Rovers boss Paul Dickov is believed to be in the market for defensive reinforcements after seeing Gabriel Tamas and Abdoulaye Meite leave the club over the close season and has identified Clarke as the man to shore up his backline.

Town will take on Clarke's prospective new employers in a behind-closed-doors friendly when both sides jet off for a pre-season trip to the Algarve later this month.
