Hepworth United will play Heyside in the final of the Barlow Cup.

Hepworth beat Meltham Athletic 3-1 in the semi-finals at Shelley FC.

In a fiercely contested tie, Hepworth always held the edge and had two or three chances in the first half.

The first led to a goal midway through the first half when Richard Marshall cut in from the left, beating three men before shooting into the bottom right corner of the net.

Shortly after, Marshall this time cut in from the right and set up Ben Ravenhill, but his effort was well saved.

Then Ravenhill did put the ball in the net but was adjudged to be offside.

Action from the Barlow Cup semi-final between Hepworth (in red) and Meltham

Despite all these efforts, Hepworth led only by the odd goal at the break.

The first 10 minutes of the second half was Meltham’s best spell.

In the third minute of the second half, the Hepworth keeper was brought into action and, two minutes later, he had to be alert as a low cross from the right caused some danger.

But 15 minutes into the second period, Hepworth increased their lead when Chris Drew struck home a fierce volley from six yards.

Drew then scored his second and Hepworth’s third 15 minutes from time which virtually settled the tie, although Nathan Addy scored a fine header from a corner to give Meltham some consolation.

Hepworth will meet Heyside in the final at the John Smith Stadium on Monday, April 11 (7pm).

There were two matches in the Groom Cup.

Slaithwaite were playing their sixth cup match in the last seven games as they beat Lindley Saddle.

Nick Spur scored twice in the first half as Slawit led 2-1, but they proved two strong in the last 45 minutes going on to win 5-2.

Luke Micklethwaite, Ashley Beardsall and Mark Rowbottom were the men on target in the second period. Saddle scorers were Josh Smith and Harry Castledine.

In the other Groom tie, a Division Four side, Almondbury Woolpack, put out a Division Three team in Lepton Highlanders.

The Woolpack had the slight slope in their favour in the first half but it did not effect the first goal after only five minutes. A long throw was propelled into the Highlanders box and Tony Wales scored.

The second was something of a ‘wonder goal’ for Woolpack’s James Acquah. He was defending a corner in his own box and he was the man that headed the ball clear.

He then chased the ball and won a 50-50 battle for the loose ball. This 50-50 battle situation carried on the length of the field with different opponents until he beat the keeper to the ball to score.

In the second half, Lepton had the slope and put some pressure on the Woolpack’s defence, but it was dead-ball situations that brought the goals.

Firstly, Lepton’s James Keenan scored direct from a corner and this led to all-out pressure from Lepton. This was rewarded when a free-kick was floated to the far post and Keenan equalised 15 minutes from time.

The winner came direct from another free-kick, but this time it was Woolpack’s Chris Senior who scored from 25 yards.

The semi-finals of the Groom Cup are Storthes Hall v Colne Valley and Woolpack v Black Horse or Slaithwaite and will take place on April 14.
