Tyrone Nurse, Huddersfield’s new English light-welterweight boxing champion, is set for a quick return to action.

The 24-year-old has been named on the bill at Leeds Arena on Wednesday, May 21.

It’s too soon for a defence of the 10st belt claimed with a convincing points win over Tyler Goodjohn in Manchester last month.

But Nurse, who is plotting a British title tilt, was keen to take the chance to shine in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

The satellite channel plan to give the Goodjohn bout, which was won 100-90, 98-91 and 98-92, an airing on this Thursday’s Ringside programme.

And Nurse will aim for a 29th win in 30 fights against a yet-to-be-named opponent in a fortnight.

It’s the first time leading sports promoters Matchroom, run by Barry Hearn and his son Eddie, have staged a show in Leeds.

Home star Josh Warrington will defend his Commonwealth featherweight title.

Liverpool’s Stephen Smith faces Fernando David Saucedo for the Argentinian’s WBC Silver featherweight title.

And there’s a Yorkshire derby as Doncaster’s Gavin McDonnell defends his British super bantamweight belt against Barnsley’s Josh Wale.

And Eddie Hearn is promising a string of big shows in the city.

Nurse’s trainer Chris Aston explained: “Plenty of people, Sky among them, took notice when Tyrone beat Tyler Goodjohn.

“They wanted him on the Leeds show and we want to be on it, because it’s another chance for Tyrone to show the way he has matured.

“It’s a cracking bill; and it’s good to be a part of it.”

Nurse and Aston will be in the crowd in Glasgow on June 27, when holder Curtis Woodhouse makes the fist defence of his British light-welterweight belt in a unification clash with Commonwealth title holder Willie Limond.

And Aston says his fighter had to be considered for a crack at the winner.

“We’ll go down whatever route is required,” he said.

“I don’t think it would be unreasonable to be mandated, but if we need to fight an eliminator, so be it.”
