Coach Gareth Lewis will call his players in for training next week optimistic the New Year will herald better things for Huddersfield Rugby Union Club.

They certainly finished their National II North 2015 programme in style with a 27-20 win at Broadstreet to move out of the bottom two placings.

That gives Field every incentive to target successive victories when Tynedale visit Lockwood Park on Saturday, January 2, especially as the visitors are just a place above Lewis’s side in the table and only four points ahead.

The Lockwood Park squad will be training next Monday and Wednesday in readiness for the Tynedale clash.

Lewis said: “We showed heart and character to win down at Broadstreet after a tough few weeks in which the lads have shown terrific dedication.

“What encourages me is that we are not only capable of performing like that, but also playing better, which is a really good thing.

“Everyone is looking forward to the Tynedale game.”

Supporters are also looking forward to Lockwood Park hosting Kevin Sinfield and Yorkshire Carnigie on Sunday, January 17 (3pm).

Sinfield, who finished second in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, has taken to the union code after 19 years of rugby league with Leeds Rhinos.

The 15-man Headingley side are taking some of their British and Irish Cup matches around the county, and the one at Huddersfield is against Munster.

It promises to be a cracking occasion for the Lockwood Park club and they have a corporate hospitality package available for £35 a head, which includes a two-course meal with wine, entrance to the game, parking and a programme.

Advance ticket prices are £10 adults, £5 concessions and it’s free for juniors aged 16 or under. Matchday prices are £12 adults, £6 concessions and juniors free.

Tickets for the Carnegie v Munster match can be bought in advance from the Rugby Retail Store at Headingley Carnegie Stadium or from the HRUFC office (01484 469801).

Former Wales prop Adam Jones is to extend his stay with Aviva Premiership club Harlequins.

Quins have announced that 34-year-old Jones, who joined them this season from Cardiff Blues, has re-signed for another year.

He retired from Test rugby 11 months ago after winning 95 Wales caps and being part of four Six Nations title-winning campaigns.

Jones also played in five Tests for the British and Irish Lions on their tours of South Africa in 2009 and Australia four years later.

Wasps expect to learn in January if Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny will agree to join them for the 2016-17 season.

Director of rugby Dai Young has confirmed that Wasps are one of several clubs chasing points machine Halfpenny, whose contract with the three-times European champions Toulon expires in June.

Young, who gave Halfpenny his professional debut at the Cardiff Blues, views the 27-year-old as the perfect replacement for Charles Piutau when the New Zealand full-back leaves at the end for the season.

“I have made no secret of it that we are one of six or seven clubs who are showing an interest in Leigh. He is certainly the type of quality player we want to attract,” Young said.

“We have already got a very good full-back in Rob Miller but Leigh is somebody who would be an ideal replacement.”
