Huddersfield Rugby Union Club have made another new signing – powerhouse prop Callum Thompson.

The 28-year-old is 18st and 6ft 1in tall and will provide even more quality in a new-look squad for the National III North campaign at Lockwood Park.

Thompson comes from the same Old Brodleians background as Ben Hoyle and Ben Morrill – both very popular at Huddersfield – and he’s already a well-known sportsman in this area, playing cricket for Barkisland in the Drakes Huddersfield League.

“I’m delighted Callum has agreed to join us,” said Huddersfield head coach Gareth Lewis.

“We have been actively looking for a quality prop and I have no doubt Callum fits the bill.

“He is ready to challenge himself by playing National League rugby and if he turns out to be half the player of the past Old Brodleians recruits – Ben Hoyle and Ben Morrill – he will be a very good player for us.”

Thompson went from Brods, his junior club, to Cleckheaton before moving abroad to play.

He played for Boorandara Kiwis in the Victoria Premier in Melbourne before moving to America, where he played for Chicago Griffins in the Midwest USA Premier Division.

“Huddersfield are a well-respected local club who have ambition,” said Thompson of his reasons for signing.

“I’ve heard great things about the club from people like Ben Morrill and Ben Hoyle, who are friends and ex-teammates, and believe I can develop my game further with the help of high-level coaching and a very strong squad of players.”
