Huddersfield YMCA will select from a 24-man squad for the biggest game in the club’s history.
The final selection choices for Saturday’s National League play-off clash at Birkenhead Park were made after the 23-10 weekend second-team triumph at arch rivals Huddersfield.
Gaining a place in the play-off squad as a result of their Lockwood Park performances were scrum-half Liam Shepherd and winger Tom Bulloch, who both scored tries, and hooker Paddy O’Brien, along with regular first-team members Jack Housley and Greig Robertson, who were in need of some valuable extra gametime.
Whether any of the players get the final nod to feature at Birkenhead Park remains to be seen.
But YMCA director of rugby Damon Scholes knows they deserve to be in the frame.
“There was a lot at stake for those who played for the Seconds the other day,” said Scholes.
“As well as getting the win which meant we finished above Huddersfield in the Seconds table for the first time, it was also an opportunity to be in the play-off frame. Everyone involved wanted to be a part of that.
“And it was great that so many came up with decent performances when it really mattered.
“It was particularly pleasing that Liam and Paddy got the call, because they’re young players who have come up through the junior ranks at Laund Hill. That shows what can be achieved if you join us as a junior, we feel as if we’re an inclusive club.
“I think the fact we’ve been able to name a 24-man squad shows how much depth we have here, because we know we’ve got at least 24 players more than capable of being part of what is such a massive game for us.”
Besides exciting on-field times, Scholes has also revealed tremendous progress is being made off the field.
“We’ve just spent around £50,000 on improving the training pitches,” he added.
“And later this year we’re also hoping to install some new floodlights on the top field, which will help make things easy for training for both the rugby and football teams.
“This really is an incredibly exciting time at all levels for the club.”
