Huddersfield diver Molly Schofield picked up a terrific haul of three gold medals at the Great Britain Diving Federation Spring Masters in Edinburgh.

The 17-year-old Greenhead College student from Birkby – who attended Crossley Heath school in Calderdale – is a member of the Impact Diving Club in Halifax under coach Chris Chambers.

She competed alongside clubmates Lizzie Wrench – who picked up a bronze in her first major competition – and Harriet Stott, who made two of the finals.

Molly, who has returned to the sport after training a few years ago at City of Leeds, was in sparkling form in Scotland, having had a fifth-place finish in the North East Ladies in Manchester last November – her first event back.

Against a field at the Royal Commonwealth Pool which included divers from around Europe, Molly cut out the errors and won by some distance, taking gold in 1m springboard, 3m springboard and 5m platform.

“Molly, Lizzie and Harriet were extremely pleased with their results – as was their coach – because they do diving for the fun of it and don’t get chance to put in the hours or use the advanced facilities that other clubs do,” said Molly’s mother Gill.

“As leisure divers, there are competitions they can do and Molly was determined to be more composed in Edinburgh than she’d been in Manchester and she just treated it as another training session in a different location.

“It worked because everything went well and she won all her classes, but Lizzie and Harriet also did excellently and all the parents are very proud of their achievements.”

The next big GBDF competition is the Winter Masters at Corby in Northamptonshire in November.

“We’ll have to see what happens between now and then,” added Gill. “The girls have been doing two 45-minute sessions a week, but Chris is having to cut back on some of his commitments and it might just be one session a week from now onwards, because diving just doesn’t get the support and funding it needs and they can’t compete without a qualified coach.

“The girls really enjoy it, though, and they give it everything, so they can be extremely proud because they are not a big club.”
