THE dream of Huddersfield darts star Scott Waites holding two world crowns has been dashed.

The current BDO world darts champion was aiming to add the BDO World Trophy, but was knocked out in the quarter-finals by unseeded Australian Peter Machin.

Having taken his second crown at Lakeside in January to add to his success in 2013, Waites was after the double playing again at the Frimley Green venue.

The 39-year-old also looked to be in good form as he made his way through to the last eight with some ease.

In the first round he met Poland’s Krzyszof Ratajski and won through 6-4.

The second round threw up a Yorkshire derby as Brian Dawson, from Thurnscoe, stood in the way, but the obstacle was blown away as Waites powered through to the quarter-finals with a 7-1 victory.

However, the last eight proved to be a much different affair with Waites spending most of the match trying to chase down his opponent from Adelaide.

Machin set the early pace but at 5-3 down Waites had the chance to change the contest in the ninth set.

A double 18 finish would have put Waites right back in contention, but he missed and Machin duly went 6-3 up and then added the next set.

Waites (right), who converted only 24 per cent of his attempts at doubles, never made looked like making up the ground and was beaten 8-4.

The Australian, who hit three bull finishes, said: “It was brilliant to take down a player like Scott Waites.

“He is the world champion, and he is a great bloke, but I never felt under pressure.

“I feel very confident and my game is very

natural and I don’t mind who I meet in the semi-finals.”
