ALAN AND ANN OXLEY were crowned champions in the inaugural Heckmondwike Petanque Spring Pairs Tournament at Firth Park, writes BONNY DELLOW.

The pair recorded a final victory over Roy and Isobel Pearson, having stormed their way to the final in impressive fashion.

The winning pair were the only 100 percent pairing in the qualifying rounds, including a 13-5 shock victory over pre-tournament favourites Steve Meadowcroft and Samantha O’Hare.

The first ever tournament game victory belongs to Roger Farrar and Clive McCulloch who defeated Mick and Barbara Hardisty, and the pair eventually finished the tournament in third place.

Club Chairman Paul Simpkins was delighted with the tournament and is set to announce a similar even for autumn.
