Bronte Murgett, of Thongsbridge, is bidding to reach the final of the Under 16 Girls event at the Sellers International Tennis Tournament.

Murgett is one game away from the showpiece at Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club after beating Zoe Judkowski 6-4 7-5 and then No4 seed Amy Griffiths, of Lancashire.

The Thongsbridge player now meets Lauren Banks of Holcombe Brook in the semi-finals, who beat Kiran Bill 3-6 6-3 10-6, while the other is between Rebecca Hill, of Nuffield Tennis Centre, and Esther Jones, of Goole.

Hill beat Emily Young, also of Thongsbridge, and Gabriella Grosvenor to reach the semis, while Jones defeated Maria Kettle, of Lancashire, in her quarter-final.

Katie and Emily Morton, who were the top two seeds in the event, have had to withdraw because of a mix-up over holiday dates.

The semi-finals and final will be staged at Edgerton today.

In the Boys 16s, Lewis Denton from Lancashire beat the No2 seed Henry Beesley to book a quarter-final place against Andre Earnshaw, of Pontefract.

The major upset in this section was the defeat of No6 seed Jamie Oakes by Leeds’ Jacob Dungworth, who went through 3-6 7-5 10-7. Dungworth now plays Max Gallins, of Ilkley.

Already through to the semis are No1 and No3 seeds Adam Jones, who won it last year, and Mark Rushton-Woods, who beat Under 14 winners Euan Wilson-Baig, a player trains at Huddersfield, 6-2, 2-6 10-5.

The Boys Under 12s was won by Robin Bloomer of Nantwich, 6-4 6-3 against Thomas Smart, while the Girls title at that age group went to MJ Changwereza of Surrey, who beat Thongsbridge’s Orla Cooper 6-2 6-3.

In the Men’s Singles, No1 seed Peter Ashley has progressed by beating Matt Lee 6-1 6-1, while Thongsbridge ace Andrew Atkinson knocked out No6 seed James Whetton and then went through to the semi-finals by beaten Jamie Oakes 6-2 6-1.

Atkinson now comes up against Faris McGrath, who had a long match against Barney Connaughton before winning 3-6 6-4 10-8.

Huddersfield’s Mike Tolman has still to play his semi-final againts Dominic Beesley.
