Newsome High School and Sports College are celebrating success at the Yorkshire Schools’ Tennis Finals

The school have developed a reputation for being a centre of excellence for the game and showed this again with their Year Eight boys’ team finishing third.

Three teams from Newsome qualified for the event following tough matches against schools from across Kirkless and Bradford, including Rishworth and Brooksbank.

“Twelve players qualified to get through to this stage: two boys’ teams and a team of four girls and they did the school proud”, said headteacher Paul Gittins.

“They were competing at a high level in the country for players in their age group and our boys’ Year Eight team came a very respectable third place and were just one point away from a tied second place.”

Resident Tennis Coach, Tim Jenkins, added: “We’re really lucky at Newsome as we have a great combination of brilliant facilities, a supportive staff team and lots of really motivated young people who love to play and compete at tennis.

“We’ve even had Sky Sports News come and broadcast live during Wimbledon fortnight as the Lawn Tennis Association and the Tennis Foundation recognised how unusual it is to have so many young people playing tennis – many all year round.”

The Tennis Foundation invited Newsome to a dinner at Wimbledon in February to receive a grant towards their tennis. They were also nominated for an Examiner Community Award.
