LOWHILLS Angling Club president Stephen Svejnoha continues his round-up of last season’s major competitions in the second of his series of articles on Hoyle Ings matches.

Lodge Farm Nr Bawtry: A bit of a longer drive than our normal excursions, but a venue we visit once a year.

This time we were on the long island pond, mainly fishing carp but also containing shoals of chub and bream, but under match conditions you have to target carp.

It was the same again for Colin “Biceps” Wood with another great catch, this time on pellet waggler. All were carp, weighing 101lbs 6oz.

Second on lassoed pellet was Franek, weighing 68lbs 6oz, while third was Stu “Spud” Whitwam on 43lbs 12oz.

Whitwam didn’t catch a fish for the first three hours, but then changed from fishing the pole across. He put up a bomb rod and cast to his right to a reed bed. Putting meat on the hook Stu took five carp for his weight.

Results: 1 C Wood 101lbs 6oz, 2 Franek 68lbs 6oz, 3 S Whitwam 43lbs 12oz.

Messingham Grange - Scunthorpe: I rate these fisheries and the species they are stocked with. There are lots of different lakes, with or without features. All methods and baits catch, and there is an on-site cafe and shop to buy pellets for fishing. Don't be put off by the distance. if you only go once, go!

The trick is don’t take a mountain of bait, take a little of everything. I can’t, and don’t fish any further out than 11 metres. That’s why I love Messingham. Start at your feet and see what happens.

Kevin Griffiths took carp and bream on meat to claim 27lbs 8oz and take the honours. Second was Hoyle Ing Fishing Club founder and treasurer Bob Haigh, who weighed 26lbs 12oz of slightly bigger carp.

I slipped third with two crucians, the rest roach and hybrids to weight 23lbs 0oz. At the weigh-in, the fishery owner actually weighs and releases the fish while he’s in the water in his chest waders.

Results: 1 K Griffiths 27lbs 8oz, 2 R Haigh 26lbs 12oz, 3 S Svejnoha 23lbs 0oz.

Section Winners: C Wood 20lbs 0oz, D Love 20lbs-8oz.

Folly-Kirkby Walkington: I and many of the other anglers had never fished in conditions as bad as this. It blew an absolute gale, the winds were blowing at 40mph.

After two hours of the match, we heard a crash and discovered a huge branch had come crashing down on Phil Keogh’s 4x4 BMW.

It could have been worse, luckily catching the corner of the roof, causing a big dent, but missing the windscreen. Keogh was only 150 yards away from his motor, so he got to it quickly.

He had been missing lots of fish on paste, but on his return, a change to meat transformed his peg. Fishing Peg 6, he put in a nice net of 27lbs 12oz on the scales, mostly of Ghost Koi to finish second.

Results: 1 Neil McFarlane 38lbs 2oz, 2 Phil Keogh 27lbs 12oz, 3 Stu Whitwam 19lbs 8oz.

Section Winner: Stephen Svejnoha 16lbs 2oz.

More next Thursday.
