CLAIRE PICKERSGILL pipped her father Brian to victory in Longwood Harriers’ annual Hanidcap event from Farnley Tyas.

The race was run in fog and heavy rain, but it didn’t stop Claire from finding her way round in 53min 18sec which, with her five minutes handicap, gave her a 16-second advantage over dad Brian, who took second spot.

Donald Kennedy had the day’s fastest time with 40-22, but with a 15-30 handicap it dropped him to sixth place overall.

In the junior event, it was another female who took the honours, with Severn Hodgson lifting the Dave Shelton Trophy as the winner and first girl, just ahead of Chloe Hever.

Rebecca Morris finished fourth overall because of having to give away 2-30 on handicap, but she set a new girls’ two-lap record with 13-05.

Robert Morris was first boy home in 11-40 to finish third overall, while Tom Scholefield won the Under 11 race.

Stainland Lions are hosting their Bluebell Trail Race again on Sunday, May 2.

The event is open to all runners over the age of 17 and attracts fell runners and road runners alike, keen to take on the demanding and scenic 10.3-mile course around Calderdale.

The race starts at 10.00 from Clay House West Vale, opposite the Lions headquarters at Heath rugby club, and race director John Bassinder is hoping to build on the success of previous years with a field of 200-plus.

“The fact we say this is a tough race just seems to attract more runners each year, which says something about runners,” said Bassinder.

“There is a lot of hard work from our volunteers and once again this year we are using the event to raise funds for Overgate Hospice.”

There will be no entries allowed on the day but all details and entry forms are available on the club’s website, and further information can be obtained from Bassinder on 07855 331150, or Entry Secretary Steve Boyer on 07855 213915.
