LIVERSEDGE athlete Jennifer Walsh struck gold at the Olympic Stadium.

Walsh, who runs for Spenborough and District AC, was competing in the British Universities and College Sports Championships at the Stretford stadium and won the 1500m title.

Walsh, who is part of the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ training scheme run by Kelly Holmes, won the title in a new personal best time of 4.17.98.

It was a gutsy performance as Walsh went to the front early in the race and pushed the pace.

She was passed by Eilish McColgan, the daughter of former Great Britain athlete Liz, at the bell but refused to let her get away and came through strongly on the home straight to win from McColgan who clocked 4.18.29.

Dame Kelly said: “Competing in the Olympic Stadium is a fantastic opportunity for all the athletes here this weekend and Jen really rose to the occasion with an excellent performance.”

There was also medal success for Newsome athlete Abigail Haywood.

The 20-year-old Loughborough University student and Sale Harrier won silver in the pole vault.

‘On Camp with Kelly’ supported by Aviva since 2004, is double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes’s mentoring and education initiative for talented young middle distance athletes. For more information, visit: www.oncampwithkelly.co.uk
