LIVERSEDGE athlete and rising star Jen Walsh has been selected to join the highly regarded ‘On Camp with Kelly’ mentoring and education initiative.

‘On Camp with Kelly’ is double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes’ mentoring and education initiative for talented young middle distance athletes.

Walsh was personally selected by Holmes after a hugely-successful 2011.

The 19-year-old scooped the Aviva English Schools senior girls cross country title, along with gold in the Aviva English Schools senior girls 800m and a silver in the Aviva England Under20 Championships 1500m.

However, it was Walsh’s impressive performance at a ‘Future Stars with Kelly’ event that caught the eye of Holmes.

She said: “Having spent time with Jen I am sure that the mentoring and education support she will be able to access through the initiative together with the hard work she puts in with her coach Deborah Rowlands will help her to achieve even more in the future.”

With a proven track record, Walsh will now undergo the impressive education programme that the scheme provides.

The Spenborough and District Athletic Club runner will learn about everything from nutrition and injury prevention to anti-doping regulations.

Walsh recently joined Holmes and fellow ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes to take part in the Sport Relief London Mile and the initiative now boasts 63 of the country’s finest young athletes, and Walsh is delighted to be one of them.

“I am so pleased to be made an official member of ‘On Camp with Kelly’,” she said.

“The support and guidance we receive is phenomenal. It’s a great opportunity to train with like-minded athletes and learn from the superb athletes and staff.”

Former marathon world record holder Khalid Khannouchi has officially announced his retirement. The Morocco-born 40-year-old, who became an American citizen in 2000, was a three-time winner of the Chicago Marathon and won the London Marathon in 2002.
