IT TOOK a final game decider for Ken Boulton and partner Naomi Downes to take the crown in the Huddersfield and District Badminton League’s mixed doubles tournament.
The final of the Mixed Doubles ‘A’ (Divisions 1-3) Handicapped event, at King James High School, saw a real nail-biter of a finale.
Played over the best of three games, the final saw Boulton and Downes (handicap +4) take on husband and wife team Hadrian and Sarah Clarke (+7).
The first end was won by Boulton and Downes at 22-20, but the second end proved to be a real tussle with the Clarkes managing to clinch the game 26-28. The deciding set was dictated by Boulton and Downes, who won 21-14.
The make up of the quarter-finals was decided by a series of group games with Boulton and Downes winners of their group by just three points.
The second group was won by Dave Lyons and Lesley Radley (+6) by one point and group three was won by Caroline Bottomley and Zainal Mohammed (+5), again by only one point.
In the quarter-finals Boulton and Downes (+7) were 21-15 winners over James Smith and Nicola Horne (scratch), Jonathan Holland and Carol Holberry (+8) narrowly beat Lance Dosser and Anne Bricklebank (scratch) 22-20, with Dosser mistakenly leaving the shuttle which landed in on match point.
Lyons and partner Radley (scratch) narrowly beat Zainal Mohammed and Caroline (+6) 21-18 and the remaining tie was won by the Clarkes (+7) from Will Browne and Judith Spangdenburg (scratch) 21-18.
In the semi-finals Boulton and Downes (+2) narrowly beat Holland and Holberry (scratch) 21-18, while the Clarke pairing (+4) proved too strong for Lyons and Radley (scratch) winning 21-10.
