HOLMFIRTH High School’s excellent run in the Center Parcs English National Schools’ Badminton Championships has come to an end.

The Under 16 boys team – Callum McLoughlin, Jamie Howard, Andrew Atkinson and Isaac Ezro – played some fine badminton in the regional rounds, but didn’t make it through.

Competing against teams including county squad players, Holmfirth did themselves proud.

The teamwork was commendable, and all are eligible to enter again next year, and work has already been planned to make next year’s competition one they can win.

In the regionals against Wensleydale, McLoughlin took his singles 21-10, but then the remaining doubles and singles games were lost 9-21,15-21,18-21 and 19-21.

In the next match, Kelvin Hall rocked Holmfirth’s confidence with a really strong performance and the score did not reflect some good rallies – 14-21,7-21,6-21,8-21 and 7-21.

The third and final match was against King Egbert’s School, and lessons learned from the previous match were put into action, but unfortunately not enough to secure advancement into the final at Sherwood Forest in April.

Scores were 7-21, 17-21, 13-21, 10-21 and 19-21.
