HOLMFIRTH High will represent Kirklees at the double in the county round of the Centre Parcs National Badminton championships.

Both their boys and girls Under 16 teams triumphed in the Kirklees Youth Games and will go forward to the Yorkshire section in Bradford next month.

At Under 14 level, Honley stormed the boys title while Colne Valley took the girls in the event at Huddersfield Sports Centre.

Holmfirth’s girls did not lose a game and scored maximum points to give them a clear win over Earlsheaton, Heckmondwike and King James.

The latter put up a tremendous fight and will go forward to the West Yorkshire Youth Games.

Holmfirth’s boys – Callum McLoughlin, Isaac Ezro, Andrew Atkinson and Jamie Howard – dropped only one game, demonstrating top tactics and teamwork to defeat Thornhill, Heckmondwike and King James.

Once again King James, losing only to Holmfirth, were runners-up and will contest the West Yorkshire Youth Games at Leeds Carnegie in June

At Under 14, Honley boys (Piers Boden, Josh Joynson, Sam Jackson andŠHengwei Zhu) progress after showing skill and determination to win all but one of their matches – this against King James, who go to the West Yorkshire event instead.

Colne Valley’s team of Mollie Ruttle, Charlotte Bradshaw, Madeline Walsh and Isabel Whittle achieved maximum points at Under 14 to overcome Earlsheaton, Shelley and Heckmondwike.

They had over 100 points to spare over runners-up Shelley (who go to Leeds) and will hope to do well in the county event at Bradford.

Prizes were presented by Kirklees Mayor Andrew Palfreeman.
